WHERE TO GO

The Whitsunday region is far more than just the magnificent islands and breathtaking Great Barrier Reef. There are so many stunning destinations on the mainland you wouldn’t want to miss…

Here are just a few suggestions:

Trail 1 - Beaches Beaches Beaches
 Bowen (77 km)

Beaches Beaches Beaches!!!! As you’re heading to Proserpine  turn into Cannonvalley Rd, through the Whitsunday sugar cane fields and onto the Bruce Highway to Bowen. Must see destinations in Bowen are Horseshoe Bay with its award winning beach, Rose Bay, Flagstaff Hill and Queens Beach with it’s stinger net. Don’t forget the Big Mango as you drive into town. Stroll through the town where 24 murals tell the colourful story of Bowen’s history.

Trail 2 - Unspoiled Paradise
 Dingo Beach (65 km)

On the way to Proserpine follow the Bowen turn off  heading North and follow the signs to Dingo Beach. Two aspects to watch out for are live stock ( Cows and Wallabies ) some sections of the road are unsealed and there are no fences between you and the wildlife.  This road offers great visual of the True Australian Bush Land.  The infinite white sands of Dingo Beach are a beach-combing paradise. The Dingo Beach Hotel is ideally situated on the beach and excellent for a pub lunch. Every Sunday they do a Seafood BBQ Lunch with a band on the beach. Garanteed great day.

Drive 3 - Rainforest at it’s Best
Pioneer Valley & Eungella National Park (200 km)
(Jazz & Smart cars only)

Head South towards Mackay and inland at Mt Ossa, one of many scenic roads that leads you to Mirani. Join The Pioneer Valley and head west to Finch Hatton Gorge and up the Clarke Range’s S-bends to Eungella and Broken River with its beautiful rainforest and over 30kms of bush walks. Spectacular panoramic views of Pioneer Valley down to the coast, amazing wildlife, and if you stay into the evening, you have every chance of sighting a platypus doing what comes naturally. If you wanted to stay and see a platypus in the wild you would need to spend a night in the rainforest. We and Bush Village recomend staying at  The Platypus Bushcamp. Wazza offers timber slab huts and camping sites amongst trees - relax and enjoy the pristine serenity of unpolluted low land rainforest. This place is truely amazing. To see more Wazzas web site is www.bushcamp.net  Tell Wazza Bush Village put you on to him.  We locals in Airlie beach go down there to get away from the hussle and bussle of Airlie beach.  For the bird and nature lovers this place is truely an experience. Ask for the honeymoon hut situated over the water. Wake up in your hut in bed and view the Platapus's and jungle perch fish in Finch Hatton George river.

Trail 4 - Panoramic Views
 Shute Harbour (11 km)

As you drive into Shute Harbour turn left into Whitsunday Drive and at the top of the hill is Lions lookout, which boasts a panorama of the Whitsundays including the distant promise of Hamilton Island. Drive further up the hill into Harbour Ave and follow Passage Ave, the views are staggering. There are several bush walks in the area that offer some amazing sites.

Trail 5 - Great Picnics
Cedar Creek Falls and Conway Beach (35 km)

On the way to Proserpine, turn left onto Conway Road and follow the signs to Cedar Creek Falls. The falls and the cool freshwater pool are spectacular in the wet season, and they are always worth a visit. Many people dont know but if you can walk around to the right side of Ceder Creek Falls their is a little track. It goes all the way upto the top. Jumping off the top is not wise. Many people have done it and many have also gone to hospital paralised. So Please DONT Jump Off. I scuba dived it first. When you get to the top keep walking there is a natural  rock pool up there. More like a natural spa bath.  Traveling on to Conway Beach is only another 15 minutes away, a vast tidal bay and peaceful beachside community. BBQ facilities are available and therefore ideal for a picnic spot. A whole day can be spent in this georgous area of the Whitsundays.

Trail 6 - Golf & Luxury
Laguna Quays Resort and Marina (65 km)

Past Proserpine and on the way to Mackay 45 minutes out turn left to Laguna Quays Resort, visit the marina, packed with highly desirable yachts and cruisers. There’s the Beach Club with its own Lagoon and water sports facilities. If you are into golf there is the world class Turtle Point Golf Course. For those that don't do golf there is a Restarunt called the Raquet Club.   The food is amazing and the pool is massive. Best of all the pool bar is one of the best on the Whitsunday mainland. You could spend a day here easily.

If you would like any more information regarding these places or the range of vehicles for hire please check out Fun Rentals web site or ask any of the local staff at Bush Village Boutique backpacker. Between our familys we will point you in the right direction.
