| Bush Village Family activly Save Proserpine Rock Wallabys |
Bush Village Boutique Backpacker Resort under the ownership of the Pannan Family (14 years) has always been heavily involved in the welfare and well-being of our local fauna, with particular emphasis on all species of wallabies, Eastern Grey kangaroos, and specifically in the last 5 years, involved with the survival and rehabilitation of our Proserpine Rock Wallaby.
The Prosperine Rock Wallaby is an Endangered Species and is thereby necessarily overseen by Queensland Parks & Wildlife in the Whitsundays. These people do an excellent job looking after these delightfully fluffy Marsupials and have established a breeding program where the Prossi Rocks are well looked after in the process and released at various locations around the Whitsundays. Sadly they were only discovered in the late 1970's and is already on the Endangered List ! This wallaby is a shy reclusive little rock dwelling delight which lives only within a radius of approximately 140 kilometres of the Shire of Whitsunday. Habitat destruction, along with road kills & domestic animals are all taking its toll on these cute little marsupials. Judith Pannan, otherwise known as Mum ,cares for and raises these little treasures when the need arises. For many years all common species were raised at Bush Village Boutique Backpackers in the large compound in the back yard. However, now all raising is done at the Pannan family residence with only common species 'over-flow' animals being raised in the enclosure behind Bush Village Resort. Although seeing Agile wallabies around Bush Village in the wild is not uncommon If any guests are seriously interested in Australian wallabies & kangaroos talks and/or visits can be arranged with Greg or Chris during your stay at Bush Village. However, there are times when no animals are in care due to their having been successfully returned to the wild. |
